Carl graduated from Michigan State University in the spring of 1968, enlisted in the Army, and served with the infantry division in 1968/69. Returning from Vietnam, he reenrolled at Michigan State and worked on his Master's in marketing.

He began his civilian career with Continental Can Corporation in 1973 as a field sales representative for the White Cap Division. In 1977, he took a position with Ford Motor Company, worked with dealer development, and covered territory in the Great Lakes region. His work with dealerships to improve customer relationships led him to leave Ford and become a Dale Carnegie instructor. He refined his approach to dealing with people and worked at the General Motors HQ for the next five years. In 1991, he moved to Atlanta and continued working in the auto industry as a consultant. He focused on helping dealerships and companies redefine their corporate culture to improve client relations.

Winding down his consulting career, he moved to Beaufort and eventually applied for the Director of Beaufort County Veterans Affairs position. Nicki Haley appointed him the new Director in November 2013 and retired in 2023. He focuses on helping people get where they want to be and moving beyond challenges that hold them back. This focus has been the most rewarding, and now, being with Southern Lifestyle Properties is a continuation of that focus, Helping People Make Good Decisions.
